On September 16, Democracy Works proudly joined a coalition of partners celebrating National Voter Registration Day (NVRD), an annual, nonpartisan civic holiday dedicated to bringing new voters into the democratic process. Since it was established in 2012, NVRD has inspired more than 6 million people to register to vote. Each year, TurboVote helps power these civic engagement efforts, making it easy for people to register to vote, check their registration status, and learn about upcoming local elections. Since 2020, more than 450,000 people have signed up for TurboVote on NVRDs alone.

That momentum continued this year, demonstrating the value of engaging new voters even in off-cycle election years. Thousands of people used TurboVote on NVRD to get ready for future elections—more than 12% of people who created a new TurboVote account this year signed up on NVRD alone. Users signing up for TurboVote in New Jersey and Virginia—two states with critical gubernatorial elections in November—outpaced this nationwide figure, underscoring how NVRD can supercharge voter education and engagement ahead of high-impact contests.

Across the country, partners promoted TurboVote to their audiences as part of their own NVRD campaigns. Organizations like HeadCount, which fosters democratic participation at music festivals, concerts, and other pop culture events, encouraged people to check their voter registration status with TurboVote. Meanwhile, Vot-ER, which inspires civic engagement through the healthcare system, used social media (and creative memes) to share its TurboVote hub, providing people with a one-stop shop to prepare for upcoming elections. TurboVote partner campaigns led to more than 6,000 registration checks in TurboVote on NVRD, with new TurboVote users accounting for 88% of this total. Together, these examples are just a small snapshot of how nonpartisan organizations rely on TurboVote—on NVRD and throughout the year—to help their audiences vote with confidence.

As much as NVRD and the other Civic Holidays are a celebration of civic engagement, they are an opportunity to renew our collective commitment to democracy. At Democracy Works, we’ll continue working with partners across the country to empower voters and make our elections more accessible.
